RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP
To renew your membership: Pay the amount shown on your invoice. Contact the National office at 1-800-242-3837 if you need a replacement invoice.
To renew online: If you are a current AIA or Associate AIA member, you can renew online at www.aia.org.
To renew by fax: Fax your invoice with credit card payment information to the AIA National office at (202) 626-7547.
To renew by mail: Send the bottom of your invoice with your check or credit card payment information to:
AIA Membership
PO Box 64185
Baltimore, MD 21264-4815
The final date to pay dues is January 31st 2008. Your membership will lapse if your dues payment is not received by the National office prior to March 31st, 2008. You can make partial payments by special arrangement with the National office.
Note: Allied members cannot renew their dues online because your member numbers are not 'recognized' by the National database. (This is because Allied members are affiliated only with the local San Francisco chapter, unless you have specifically applied and paid dues to the State or National office.)
Questions about your Invoice or your Dues Rate? Need a payment receipt?
Contact the AIA National office at 1-800-242-3837. The National membership hotline has full-time staff available from 8am-5pm EST; they will look up your current dues rate if you do not have your 2008 invoice. They can also assist you if you are paying dues for multiple members of your firm and generate receipts as the local AIA office does not handle payments or processing.
Note: If you did not pay dues in 2007 you will not receive an invoice for 2008 as your membership is considered lapsed. Contact the National office for a dues quote and invoice. If you did not receive an invoice, make sure the AIA has your current contact information and address by sending an e-mail to revans (at) aiasf.org.
LAPSED MEMBERSHIPS
AIA memberships follow the calendar year, though there is a small grace period after January 1 when your membership will remain active. If you do not pay dues by March 31, your membership will lapse and you will not receive an invoice for the following membership year. Your mailings will cease, and you will not be elegible for Local, State, or National discounts or events.
To reinstate your lapsed membership:
1) Calculate your dues.
If you do not have your invoice for 2008 dues, you can order a replacement or find out your rate by calling the AIA National office at 1-800-242-3837. AIA and Associate AIA members that have been lapsed for more than 2 years (last paid dues in 2005, not a member for 2006-2007) will revert to “Step 1” level dues rates, same as a new member. You will also be eligible for pro-rated dues rates and the “15 for 12” promotion in October 2008. If you lapsed in 2007 (last paid dues in 2006) then you will pay the same 'step' dues rate you left off at. You can contact the California Council at (916) 448-9082 for more information on Step dues rates.
2) Complete and send in the appropriate membership application with your dues payment.
On the form, include your 8-digit member number to indicate you are a prior member of the AIA, even if you were in a different chapter. As long as you live or work within San Francisco or Marin counties, your membership will automatically be transferred to our chapter and you do not need to complete a transfer form. Make sure to update any contact information that has changed, including your home or office addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail address.
STEP DUES FOR RENEWING MEMBERS
The State of California charges increased ‘step’ dues rates for the first 3 years of an AIA or Associate AIA membership. This indicates your advancement in professional practice. The invoice sent to your address of record states the total amount you owe including the 'Step" increase. If you do not have your invoice, contact the AIA National office at 1-800-242-3837 to determine your dues rate.
SUPPLEMENTAL DUES
Each AIA member firm is responsible for paying additional dues for their non-member staff. These fees go to supplement the local and National chapter programs and discounts; however they do not constitute membership in the chapter. Supplemental dues are mandatory for all firms with a Principal or Owner who is an active AIA level member. These dues do not apply to Allied firms, or firms with a Principal who is an Associate AIA member.
These supplemental dues amounts are also reflected on the invoice that is sent to the primary AIA member of the firm (Principal, President, etc.) in Section C 'Dues Liability Calculator'. Following are the charges that will be assessed for 2008. There is a 1–year grace period, so if you join in 2008, your firm will not be assessed these dues until 2009.
- Licensed Architects (Non-AIA-Member): $477. total
- (includes $225.00 per person/local surcharge plus $252.00 per person/national surcharge = $477.)
- Technical Staff - $150.00 per person total
- (These people are qualified for Associate Membership, but not members of the chapter. For example, CAD draftspersons or other project-billable staff doing architectural work. They may have a diploma but are not licensed.)
- Other Staff (for example, administrative, overhead, accounting) - $0.00 zero owed for these staff
Note: Member Architects (AIA , Associate AIA) are not levied supplemental dues because they have already paid member dues.
Note: Firms who pay supplemental dues receive many member discounts for all of their staff; however it costs more to be a member of the AIA and some benefits and discounts only apply to a single active member. For example, anyone from a firm paying its full supplemental dues can sign up for the member rate for ARE classes offered at the AIA SF. They can also use their Principal's AIA Member number to purchase a quantity of event tickets at the member rate.
MEMBER TRANSFERS FROM OTHER CHAPTERS
If you have moved into our chapter region and you are a member in good standing for this year, you may transfer your membership at no cost. The following year, you will be required to pay dues at the AIA SF rates. If you transferred from another state, you will start at California "Step 1" Dues rates (same as a new member.) If you transferred from within California, you will continue at the same "Step" rate where you left off at your former chapter.
To initiate your transfer, download our transfer form from the Applications page and submit it to your former chapter for their signature. Transfers usually take 2 months to be fully processed; including updating the addresses for your subscription to Architectural Record (AIA and Associate AIA members.)
If you have not paid your dues for this year to your former chapter, your transfer process will include paying our full chapter dues amount for your membership category. Contact the AIA SF office for more information, and to get a rate quote.
