San Francisco, CA (August 30, 2007) – The American Institute of Architects, San Francisco chapter (AIA San
Francisco) and Center for Architecture + Design announce the fourth annual Architecture and the City festival, which takes place
September 1-30, 2007.
Celebrating San Francisco’s unique built environment and design community, Architecture and the City is the first
series of its kind in the Bay Area to feature architectural tours, film screenings, exhibitions, design lectures, green building tips and more. The month-long celebration engages members of the public and design enthusiasts, as well as
architects and designers, with a deeper appreciation for San Francisco’s rich architectural and design community. In
honor of the annual festival, Mayor Gavin Newsom has officially proclaimed September "Architecture and the City" month.
For the first time ever, Architecture and the City is collaborating with the San Francisco Department of the Environment to bring green and sustainability issues to the forefront. "This is an exceptional and unique opportunity to showcase San Francisco's diverse architectural talent and presents a forum to promote new ideas for innovative design and development in the city," says Zigmund Rubel, 2007 AIA San Francisco President.
The premier media sponsor of the 2007 Architecture and the City festival is Dwell.
Additional media sponsors are 7x7, The Architect's Newspaper, CBS Outdoor, KQED, ReadyMade, and TODO. The official green sponsor is the San Francisco Department of the Environment. The official car sponsor is City Car Share.
Festival outreach and promotion includes a 30-second Public Service Announcement on KQED that begins airing August 27th, as well as a citywide poster campaign at select bus shelters. Through this exposure, festival curator and AIA San Francisco Assistant Director, Erin Cullerton, believes the festival will reach an even broader community of Bay Area dwellers interested in architecture and design. Last year's festival reached an unprecendented 17,000 individuals.

September 6-October 26, AIA San Francisco and Center for
Architecture + Design Gallery, 130 Sutter Street, Suite 600, San Francisco
The landscape of San Francisco is changing in new and extraordinary ways. Far from the San Francisco of Victorian architecture and romantic streetscapes, new developments signal the city’s willingness to make room for radically new ideas alongside its cherished legacy of historic preservation. From the Treasure Island Redevelopment Plan, a vision for multiple neighborhoods, to the Blue Bottle Coffee Kiosk, a design for a single alleyway storefront, these changes are happening citywide and across scales. Moreover, these projects are unabashedly modern, not only in their stylistic and technological pursuits, but in their aims to excite public imagination and renew a sense of civic life.

It encourages people to rethink the way streets are used, consider the need for urban parks, reclaim the streets for bikes and people, and expand the public realm by creating new opportunities for social exchanges. As part of the event, people temporarily transform parking spots into PARK(ing) Spaces: a temporary repurposing of a metered parking spot into a park, playground, lounge, workspace, etc. The possibilities are endless.
