David Meckel, FAIA
David Meckel, FAIA, is the Bay Area architecture and design community’s Ethernet hub. Beginning with his founding of California College of the Arts’ architecture program in 1986, he has connected architects and designers, young and old, building bridges across the generations and the design disciplines.
Blessed with a voice that can command even the rowdiest room, he leads quietly and economically, sharing credit with profane good cheer. His touch can be felt in a multitude of places, from the open studio environment of CCA’s San Francisco campus, to the Tribal Elder sessions at the Monterey Design Conference, to the holdings of SF MOMA’s Architecture and Design collection. His guidance of AIASF’s Fellowship Committee has earned the chapter unsurpassed success.
Yet his most enduring contribution may be the steady mentoring—through a gentle nudge, a wry caution, a casual introduction, a forwarded e-mail, a Post-It note on a newspaper clipping—of innumerable, grateful individuals.
