2022 Architecture Merit Award
633 Folsom makes a resolute commitment to sustainability by retaining the original concrete chassis of an outdated building while refitting and expanding the structure for a new era of occupancy. Innovative solar shading assures glare-free daylight access while leading energy conservation toward AIA 2030 targets.
The jury celebrated this project as a successful typological investigation into how to expand upon an existing building without overwhelming or diminishing its origins. The skin is an ambitious and novel conceptual approach, resulting in a striking and simple urban expression.
