Glen Ellen Aerie

2018 Architecture Honor Award

Sited in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains, this home floats over the hillside with commanding views of the Northern California wine country. The resulting home is a quiet armature that frames a stunning natural context while providing an environment that blurs the line between interior and exterior.

The Glen Ellen Aerie house rises to the greatness of its site, not by overpowering but through elegant restraint. The thinnest columns support floating slabs, lifting the building off of the site. This respect for the existing land is made more evident in the site plan, where a minimal footprint demonstrates how simple rectangles can be the most agile solution when architecture meets topography.
