2018 Architecture Citation Award
Located at the edge of San Francisco Bay, Fort Mason Pier 2 has been transformed into a dynamic new campus for San Francisco Art Institute. This adaptive rehabilitation preserves the industrial integrity of the landmark structure, supports the school's pedagogical goals, integrates advanced sustainable strategies, and forges new community connections.
The design of this reuse project is expertly handled with a lovely provision for current program and an eye toward the building's future uses. The project's preservation of the industrial integrity of the landmark means that future transformations can take advantage of the original building's strong bones. This is transformational preservation at its finest.
