Washington Square Convenience Station

2018 Social Responsibility Special Commendation

This new public restroom and maintenance facility is located in North Beach’s historic Washington Square Park. It provides a secure, accessible, and clean public amenity and—through its siting and materials—complements its historic setting and creates a welcoming landmark for a diverse set of park users.

Designing the mundane well is a social service, and design excellence like this provides much needed social value. The architecture is elegant and welcoming. This tiny project takes great care to make a humble building into a source of delight and urban improvement.
