In Situ

2019 Interior Architecture Merit Award

Located in the SFMOMA, In Situ represents a unique and rich intersection of art, design, and food, each augmenting the other to re-imagine museum dining. Discreetly placed "artifacts" – including commissioned art, custom lighting and furniture, and a sculptural wood ceiling – are employed to enhance the guest’s experience.

The floating, street-level transparency is welcoming and homey rather than intimidating. The jury liked the tight palette of materials, including reclaimed wood and limited colors. The design abstracts motifs from the building exterior and makes them beautiful, and the transition from the edifice in to the scale of the project makes it feel like a different world. This is an inventive project of great visual interest that uses material topography to take an ordinary space and transform it into something extraordinary.
