2020 Architecture Merit Award + Urban Design Commendation

This modern, mixed-use community interweaves high-density homes and diverse open space to maximize housing, create connections, and activate the edges of an underutilized city block. Two mid-block passageways establish a walkable scale, and an inviting—and surprising—public redwood grove provides a serene sanctuary for the bustling area.

The jury commends the project for bringing desperately needed public open space into the painfully long South of Market block. Retail spaces and residential stoops make for a lively streetscape. The composition and finishes of the façades further modulate the rhythm of the block.
