2020 Architecture Citation Award
The Moscone Center Expansion transforms Northern California’s largest convention center into a publicly spirited civic work of architecture. The traditional black box convention center is turned inside-out, using program, form, transparency, circulation, light, and landscape to connect visitors to the city, and the neighborhood to the activity in the building.
The jury was pleased with this handsome, responsibly urban, clearly navigable instance of an impossible building type, finding it to be a significant improvement over its predecessor. The project is especially successful at making the building meet the street; it serves visitors, and not the traffic whizzing by.
