Balboa Park Pool Renovation

2021 Social Responsibility Commendation

The renovation of this beloved neighborhood pool is part of citywide efforts to improve wellness and recreational equity among underserved communities. Once a failing, degraded, unwelcoming structure, Balboa Pool is again a local icon, with enhanced visibility and new uses. A focus on sustainability reduces water and energy use.

The jury loved that the renovation of the pool house has transformed a well-used, but under-maintained community asset into a sustainable point of pride and identity in its community.

COTE Comments

In their review of the project, AIASF's Committee on the Environment found that the public pool renovation project’s greatest sustainability assets focus on the Design Excellence topics of Community, Economy, Water and Energy conservation. The design team did significant neighborhood outreach, and a mural by a local artist was incorporated to celebrate the neighborhood’s diversity. The renovation focused on efficient use of existing space to expand public areas, bringing together members of the community for shared activities.

Energy Use Intensity was reduced 44% from baseline, achieved through efficient mechanical systems and lighting replacement, and passive daylighting approaches. Preserving the existing building structure and various finishes helped in reducing embodied carbon by approximately 50%. A unique dehumidification technology directs water to toilet flushing, contributing to a 45% reduction in water use from baseline projects. The design integrated local flora and fauna, as well as specified window treatment to reduce bird collisions. Seismic and accessibility upgrades were a primary design focus, adding to the existing building’s longevity and enhancing universal access. Overall, a solid broad approach to Design Excellence.
