Westwood Hills Nature Center

2021 Architecture Merit Award

The new net-zero energy Westwood Hills Nature Center provides the City of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, the means to connect people to nature. Conceived of as a teaching tool, the building, and site design demonstrates ways that we can best inhabit our environment.

The jury noted that the architecture here is a compelling demonstration that architectural design excellence is not at odds with environmental stewardship.

COTE Comments

In their review of the project, AIASF's Committee on the Environment noted that this ILFI Certified Net Zero Nature Education Center in Minnesota embraced a holistic approach to design excellence, demonstrating an exemplary approach to equitable, educational, resilient, and efficient building design. The Energy Use Intensity of this all-electric net-zero energy project tracked 103% better than baseline measured performance. The project’s heavy timber construction helps achieve 40% carbon reduction from similar buildings. The envelope, massing and shading designs are optimized for energy reduction and user comfort. Rainwater capture was integrated into an interpretive feature.

The envelope, massing, and shading are optimized for efficiency. Thermal mass is incorporated to capture winter solar gain alongside in-floor radiant heating. For warmer months, passive and active ventilation strategies include operable windows and ceiling fans as low-energy means of achieving human comfort. Energy use is reduced using daylighting throughout and a geothermal wellfield to supplement all-electric boilers as a heat source for a radiant floor slab. Future weather data models were used in energy modeling to ensure future performance meets goals. This well-balanced project approach succeeds in multiple Design Excellence categories and is deserving of applause.
