Valley Rock ADU

2022 Architecture Merit Award

This 816 SF home is a simple pavilion set along a dense service core. But, taking inspiration from the site’s volcanic history and porous igneous rocks, the dark and sculptural roof has an uncanny feeling of lightness despite all appearances.

The jury was struck by the janusian quality of this project, with the two sides providing a strikingly compelling contrast; disguised as a modest hut from the front, the small dwelling is revealed to be a high-end ultra-modern pavilion, featuring strong ideas around energy efficiency, resource conservation, and resilience. There is a laudable rigorous focus and simplicity here, and the marvelous execution of the roof further elevates the project.
