The 17th Annual Architecture + City Festival

Each year the Architecture + City festival features behind-the-scenes tours, authors series, exhibitions, and an excellent opportunity for communities to experience architecture and design in a myriad of ways throughout San Francisco.

We’ve included sample content for you to share with your communities below. Through outreach and collective efforts, we hope to bring new opportunities and encourage engagement.

The 17th annual Architecture + the City festival goes virtual this year! Register now and experience architecture and design through an array of behind-the-scenes programs, live discussions, and more!
How can San Francisco be a more connected city? How can we address its challenges of housing, climate change, economic, and health equity? How do we design with connection in mind, that is human-centered and focused on health, inclusivity, and resilience?

This year’s festival takes place September 11-30. Enjoy some of these highlights:

  • Explore: We’ll go deep into the Fillmore, Mission and Chinatown districts to talk about the artistic, cultural, and architectural narratives that have long been the unique ingredients of those beloved neighborhoods.
  • Read: Our popular Authors Series continues with a line-up of exciting literary conversations with Lily Bernheimer, The Shaping of Us; Inga Saffron, Becoming Philadelphia; and Clive Wilkinson, The Theatre of Work.
  • Visit: Every Saturday in September, we will feature a different kind of home tour that will take us beyond San Francisco’s borders and into residential projects in Mexico (Atotonilco) and Sea Ranch (Sonoma County) as well as rare glimpses into a pair of Tiny House projects (East Bay) and the historic Case Study House #26 (San Rafael).
  • Discover: Architecture created by animals have parallels that can be found in vernacular architecture around the world. In “Pragmatism: Architecture in Nature” learn how these parallels shed light on paths forward and how we might understand more clearly our place in the natural world.
