Organization Overview

The Cincinnati Main Library renovation transforms a nearly 75-year-old structure into a welcoming, future-ready civic destination. Developed from a multi-year Facilities Master Plan, the project is the first step in a phased revitalization of the two-block, seven-story library.

The redesign removes architectural barriers, replacing an elevated, uninviting plaza with two vibrant civic spaces seamlessly connected to downtown. These flexible plazas accommodate diverse events, from mobile health clinics to art festivals, enhanced by dynamic illuminated sculptures.

Inside, the renovation fosters engagement and accessibility. A striking new atrium features a social stair, wrapped in custom art-glass guardrails inspired by Cincinnati’s musical heritage. With sightlines improved throughout, visitors easily navigate spaces like the Cincinnati Storytime Center, children and teen areas, and versatile meeting rooms.

Since reopening in July, the library has hosted a range of events, from a Governor’s Forum to Bootsy Collins’ 75th birthday concert. Blending history with innovation, the renovation reinvents the Main Library as an inclusive, dynamic cultural hub for generations to come.
