Security Building

Organization Overview
This net-zero energy mass timber building is a state-of-the-art security and emergency response center. The single-story building contains offices and an apparatus bay for parking and maintenance of emergency vehicles, and serves as a hub for essential services on the campus.
A 72% reduction in whole-life carbon is achieved through its mass timber structure, low-carbon concrete, insulation, and finishes, paired with an all-electric, refrigerant-free HVAC system. The exposed interior timber elements eliminated unnecessary finishes to maintain high indoor air quality along with toxin-free material finishes.
The interior is designed with the psychological well-being of employees and visitors in mind, recognizing the high stress environments many are faced with when called to the field. This facility will elevate the everyday experience of its users, allowing the natural beauty of its materials to shine that complement the variety of workspace environments and the full kitchen and amenities deck with BBQ grill. Modern, high-contrast materials and rich earthy tones will complement biophilic elements such as a structural wood ceiling that adds visual warmth to the offices and public spaces.
The unique architectural design features a butterfly-sloped high roof with clearstory. This allows for optimized rooftop PV orientation on the exterior with an exposed cross-laminated timber ceiling beneath, filling the offices with abundant natural daylight and biophilic qualities. The exterior façade comprises of Swiss Pearl Fiber Cement Panels, a wood panel rainscreen wall, a standing seam roof, and curtainwall.
