Organization Overview

This house is one of the first constructed using cross-laminated timber produced in the US. Sitting on the site of a forest lost to wildfire two decades ago, the home nods to its history with ashen burnt cedar board siding and the raw CLT finish of its interior.
The jury loved how this project pushes a vernacular language forward in a fresh way. The simple diagram and legibility of silhouette strike a lovely balance. The forms play a game between inside and outside in small-scale dimensions, creating a tic-tac-toe of spaces where each achieves a unique orientation and connection to nature. The quality of each room shifts according to orientation and programming. Across the various intersections ? from room to room, and inside to outside ? lovely moments of transparency arise; where density of structure is expected, one instead finds an opening of view and the strengthening and enriching of the interior/exterior relationship. The project deploys mass timber and executes it beautifully with a clever and refreshing design.
