    Celebrate the best in architecture, design, and sustainability, and the impact of design leadership in the Bay Area. Recognizing achievement in a broad range of architectural work in and by the San Francisco Bay Area design community, the Design Awards program informs the public of the breadth and value of the architectural practice.

    This ceremony is free and open to the public; making a donation to AIASF with registration is encouraged.

    Keynote

    Lawrence Scarpa, FAIA

    Founding Principal of Brooks + Scarpa
    Lawrence Scarpa is the founding principal of Brooks + Scarpa, and recognized for his creative use of conventional materials in unique and unexpected ways, and as a pioneer and leader in the field of sustainable design. In his address, Larry will demystify the Awards and Jury Process – examining what makes an award-worthy project and discussing how firms can craft compelling submissions that highlight the strengths of their best work.

    Founding Director, Studio MK27

    Marcio is the founding director of Studio MK27, who joins us from São Paulo. In his charming letter to the mayor of São Paulo highlighting what shouldn't be done in a city, we see how love for a place outshines its faults.

    We are pleased to welcome Manuelita, Founder and Director of SuperWorks, who will present the special commendations in the category of Social Responsibility. Manuelita represents AIASF's Design Awards Partner at Public Architecture.

    Allison Arieff is Senior Editor, City Monitor at New Statesman Media Co. Former Editorial Director of the urban planning & policy think tank, SPUR. Opinion writer for the NY Times. Recipient of the 2018 Steven Heller Award for Cultural Commentary. Bylines at Wired, City Lab, Metropolis, and others. Allison was EIC, founding editor of Dwell magazine, Design Lead at IDEO and in book publishing at Chronicle Books & Random House.

     

     

     

    Tim Culvahouse, FAIA, is a contributing author, with Ellen Lou, to John Lund Kriken’s Building Saigon South: Sustainable Lessons for a Livable Future (2017), editor of The Tennessee Valley Authority: Design & Persuasion (2007), and editor of arcCA DIGEST, the journal of AIA CA. His writing, with emphasis on architectural materiality and the built form of New Orleans, has been widely published. He has taught at RISD, where he served as head of the Department of Architecture, and at CCA, where he was associate dean for the Schools of Design and Architectural Studies.

     

     

    Sheila Kennedy, FAIA is an American architect, innovator, and educator. She is a Professor of Architecture at MIT and a founding Principal of KVA Matx, an interdisciplinary practice that is widely recognized for material research and innovation in architecture and the design of new infrastructure for emerging public needs. Designated as one of Fast Company’s emerging Masters of Design, Kennedy is described as an “insightful and original thinker who is designing new ways of working, learning, leading, and innovating.”

     

     

    Lawrence Scarpa, FAIA Lawrence Scarpa, founding principal of Brooks + Scarpa has garnered international acclaim for the creative use of conventional materials in unique and unexpected ways. He is the recipient of the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum Award in Architecture and was also awarded the State of California and National American Institute of Architects Architecture Firm Award. Over the last ten years, Scarpa's firm has received more than 50 major design awards.
