    Accessibility Brown Bag: Door / Door Hardware / Gates (1 MCE)

    Specifying and coordinating doors and door hardware is difficult time consuming task, not to mention ensuring that door and gate assemblies are accessible and useable to people with disabilities. This seminar will review door maneuvering clearances, opening dimensional widths and heights, differences between entrance and exit doors, pairing of door and gate hardware assemblies with types of doors and their uses, passage doors and closet conditions, power assist verse automated doors, and what exiting codes and standards must be met at accessible doors and gates. The seminar will also cover the essential mechanisms of operable parts of door and gate hardware and how these components should be specified and tested.

     


    Learning Objectives

    1. Understand the accessibility regulations covering doors and gates other openings
    2. Review the scoping and technical requirements within CBC Chapters 10, 11A and 11B.
    3. Identify the minimum requirements for entrance, exits, and manual and automated hardware.
    4. Recognize common mistakes and review optional ways for correction
    5. Apply the knowledge to improve specifications and construction documents
    6. Know where to go for more information

     


    About the Presenter

    Dawn Anderson, AIA, CASp, IOR

    Ms. Anderson is a Senior Building Inspector and Access Compliance Officer in the Architectural Access Division of the Mayor’s Office on Disability at the City and County of San Francisco. Dawn’s primary responsibilities are conducting plan reviews and inspections of city owned, operated, leased, or funded facilities. Projects include alterations and new construction of large affordable housing developments, civic buildings, and various outdoor environments. Her duties also include interdepartmental advisement, facility surveys, programmatic and scoping analysis and assistance, and inspections for permanent construction and temporary facilities in an effort to remove architectural barriers and promote civic engagement.
