    AIASF IPC Presents: International Professionals Program – Career Strategies for International Professionals

    This panel discussion — presented by the AIASF International Practice Committee in collaboration with Elisabeth Sporer Founding Principal of SO|arch — will focus on best practices for international professionals new to the US; opportunities and challenges for Design and Engineering firms when recruiting international talent; and best practices around career advancement (networking, community involvement, mentorship, membership in industry organization, and other tactics).

    Maryam Miri [DLR Group]; Laurie Dreyer [Taylor Design], Hannah Brown [Brown Creative Consulting], and Jonathan Grode [Green + Spiegel LLC] discuss the path(s) to a career in design and architecture, particularly for international practitioners (immigrants) in the San Francisco Bay Area.

    This program is accredited by AIASF to provide 1 continuing education learning unit to AIA member attendees. Registration for this event is open at the bottom of this page.

     


    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of this course, participant will be able to

    1. better understand current visa regulations and practices
    2. gain more understanding about the role of expat practitioners in shaping future practice
    3. get insight into visa related HR policies of large and small firms to better position themselves
    4. implement short-term tactics for personal growth and development

     


    About the Moderator

    Maryam Miri, AIA
    DLR Group, Project Manager

    Maryam has gained a broad depth and range of experience designing major projects in Asia, Australia and now in North America. Her global view towards solving every puzzle gives her an ability to offer a unique design thinking perspective. She has exceptional skills in project planning, design and management, leading design teams to success on countless projects. Maryam specializes in high-rise towers, large-scale residential and mixed-use projects.

     


    About the Panelists

    Laurie Dreyer
    Taylor Design, Principal & Chief Development Officer

    Laurie is a native Californian, a graduate of UC Berkeley and has 25+ years in the AEC industry. She has held key leadership roles at Gensler, The Ratcliff Architects, Gensler, Psomas, Anshen+Allen/Stantec and now Taylor Design. She has spoken and taught in many venues: AE Advisors CEO Roundtables, Matheson Advisors, AIA events, EQxD, ACEC’s Senior Executives Institute, and KA Connect. Laurie’s immigrant grandfather was an Architect and that is where it all began. She is happily married, with 2 dogs and many hobbies.

    Hannah Brown, SHRM-SHP
    Brown Creative Consulting, Founding Principal

    As founding principal of Brown Creative Consulting LLC Hannah built her career upon a unique set of experiences managing and marketing architecture firms. Unique to most consultants, Hannah holds degrees in creative fields with a MArch from UC Berkeley and a BA in Art History. Hannah is devoted to finding creative solutions to organize the operations of architecture and landscape architecture firms. Currently, her practice spans the Bay Area of California and specializing in the issues of running a practice with 4-35 people.

    Jonathan Grohde, Attorney
    Green + Spiegel LLC, US Practice Director

    As US Practice Director at Green and Spiegel LLC, Jonathan provides professional legal services relating to all aspects of American immigration law. Jonathan also provides presentations on US immigration for corporations, non-profit organizations, chambers of commerce and small business forums. Additionally, Jonathan contributes his knowledge and legal expertise to publications (solo and co-authored) as well as selected pro bono efforts. Jonathan obtained his law degree from Temple University and has over 16 years of experience in the business immigration law field.
