New Specifications for Stainless Steel Structural Design
<< All EventsNew Specifications for Stainless Steel Structural Design
With the publication of the new AISC 370 specification for structural stainless steel, AISC 313 code of standard practice, and substantial revision of ASCE/SEI 8, structural design with austenitic and duplex stainless steels has become much easier. The presenter serves on all of these committees and on AWS D1.6 structural welding code stainless steel and has significant experience providing metallurgical support for aesthetic and functional structural projects.
This presentation will provide a review of these new resources to provide both Architects and Engineers with an understanding of what is contained in them. Additionally, a comparison of the mechanical and physical properties of structural metals will be provided. The benefit provided by structural stainless steels is not limited to corrosion resistance. They can also provide high strength and resilience. Guidance on appropriate alloy selection and specification will be provided. A range of application examples from low profile glass curtain wall to bridges and the reasons for stainless steel selection will be provided.
This program is in collaboration with AIASF's Building Enclosure Council.

Learning Objectives (1 LU/HSW)
-Â Learn about the contents of the new AISC and SEI/ASCE 8 specifications, code and design guide.
- Learn about the families of stainless steel and their differences from the perspective of corrosion performance, mechanical and physical properties.
- Obtain guidance on appropriate alloy selection for corrosion resistance and specification for structural applications.
- Learn where stainless steel is being used structurally and the reasons for its selection. Case study examples will be used.
