    Description:

The list of design questions during schematic design (SD) and design development (DD) is long, and schedules are tight. It is common that many decisions are made without taking advantage of information from energy analysis. The result can be lost opportunities for improved performance. As energy codes become more stringent and designers adopt aggressive energy performance goals, it is becoming more important to integrate the use of energy analysis in order to make informed decisions.

This presentation is for architects who are looking for guidance on how to use energy analysis in design, rather than simply to document compliance with an energy code requirement. Topics include identifying the SD and DD design questions that can be effectively addressed by energy analysis, developing an energy analysis plan, engaging an energy modeling specialist, and working with the specialist to get timely and useful information.
This presentation will be held in-person at the AIASF, 130 Sutter St., 6th Fl., San Francisco, and will be simulcast via internet in collaboration with the Pacific Energy Center.

    Presenters:

    Erik Kolderup, PE, LEED AP

Erik Kolderup, PE, LEED AP, is Principal of Kolderup Consulting based in San Francisco, California. He has provided sustainability and energy consulting services since 1990, when he joined Eley Associates as an energy engineer. He became an owner in 1994 and served as vice president until the firm’s merger with Architectural Energy Corporation in 2004. After three years as Associate Principal, sharing management of AEC’s San Francisco office, Mr. Kolderup started Kolderup Consulting in 2007. He is also a consulting faculty member at Stanford University where he teaches a class on energy-efficient building systems. He holds degrees in electrical engineering and industrial engineering from Stanford University. He was a voting member of the ASHRAE Standard 209 Committee.

    Pauline Souza, AIA, LEED Fellow

Pauline is an architect, Partner, K-12 sector lead and the Director of Sustainability at WRNS Studio. Current projects/efforts include the Janet Durgin Guild and Commons, a LEED Platinum, LBC and Well Educational pilot Building, a straw bale visitor center for the USFS, the Microsoft Campus in Silicon Valley using LBC Water Petal and WELL, and serving as Sustainability Advisor to the Hawaii Department of Education – driving sustainability through their 256 existing campuses. She has served as a co-chair for the USGBC’s Center for Green Schools, is a founder of the Bay Area Sustainable Leaders in Architecture group and works with the International Living Future Institute Water Congress, all groups working collaboratively to make change. She is a LEED Fellow and was recognized as an LBC Hero in 2014.

AIA CES Learning Objectives: At the end of the program participants can

    1. Name a reason why whole building energy performance increases in importance as design proceeds through conceptual, schematic, and development phases..
    2. Cite an example of an interactive effect on whole building energy performance involving two design decisions.
    3. Name a certification, licensure or other indicator of skill level that can aid in selecting a whole building energy modeler.
    4. Describe how a project with a small budget can benefit from energy modeling and name one or more analyses likely to be prioritized.
