181 Fremont: A Seismic Shift in Resilient Design Solutions

A zoning change in San Francisco at the beginning of the 21st century enabled the development of very tall transit-oriented towers in the city, a major shift from the previous 25 years, during which downzoning and resistance to development and changes to the city skyline prevailed. The opportunity to construct an 800-foot-tall, mixed-use, slender high-rise next to the Transbay Terminal combined with a series of innovations in seismic, wind, resilient, and sustainable design have culminated in 181 Fremont, currently recognized as the safest and most resilient tower on the West Coast. In this presentation, Heller Manus president and founder Jeffrey Heller, FAIA, will walk through the realization of this project, from its design conception to its achievements to date.
