Accessibility Brown Bag: Parking (1 MCE)
Parking is the number one litigated architectural barrier and is one of the largest components of the design and construction of buildings, campus, and public right of way. This seminar will look at proper design and construction of accessible parking under the ADA, FHA and the CBC. This session will also explore common situations, issues, and legal update pertaining to accessible parking and complex design scenarios.
Learning Objectives
- Review accessible parking for new and existing construction and its relationship to the primary function of a facility.
- Compare and contrast the parking requirements for the applicable federal and state regulations including ADA, FHA and the CBC.
- Explore parking design serving various building occupancies including healthcare, educational and institutional developments, and housing
- Discuss the design of underground, on grade, automated, and multi-storied parking facilities.
- Understand the common mistakes of parking and its relationship with charging stations, valet parking, designated parking, visitor parking, signage, and accessible routes serving parking.
- Define the scoping and fundamental technical elements of all parking.
About the Presenter
Dawn Anderson, AIA, CASp, IOR
Ms. Anderson is a Senior Building Inspector and Access Compliance Officer in the Architectural Access Division of the Mayor’s Office on Disability at the City and County of San Francisco. Dawn’s primary responsibilities are conducting plan reviews and inspections of city owned, operated, leased, or funded facilities. Projects include alterations and new construction of large affordable housing developments, civic buildings, and various outdoor environments. Her duties also include interdepartmental advisement, facility surveys, programmatic and scoping analysis and assistance, and inspections for permanent construction and temporary facilities in an effort to remove architectural barriers and promote civic engagement.
