AIASF Zoom Tour Backen & Gillam Architects is an award-winning architectural design firm formed in 1996. The firm has three offices, one located in Sausalito, one in Beverly Hills, and an office in Saint Helena adjacent to our restaurant, Archetype. Principals Howard J. Backen and Jim Gillam, along with the firm’s five Principals and 55 employees, bring a wide range of experience to Backen & Gillam Architects projects. This experience enables the firm to provide its clients with the very best in design and project management. As a firm, we offer master planning, programming, interior design and full architectural services for residential, commercial, hospitality and retail with an emphasis on sustainability and a respectful relationship to the land.

Backen & Gillam Architects is at the center of a new movement integrating lifestyle and land regeneration concepts into the traditional design process which emphasizes comfort over pretension and elegant simplicity over complication. Our projects strive to express an artful exploration of that this new way of thinking. Our work conveys a sense of intimacy, warmth, and informality through the use of natural materials.
