Join us for this one-on-one conversation with Rich Hillis, Director, San Francisco Planning Department and John Lum, AIA, Founding Principal, John Lum Architecture. Continuing conversations from the recent 2020 AIASF Housing Symposium, this segment will discuss the future of San Francisco in the next 100 years, how this city will be able to cope with the continued high demand for housing and the continued escalation of housing prices, what zoning, codes and processes might need to change in order to accommodate this growth while protecting its distinct neighborhood characters and communities.

Rich Hillis, Planning Director, San Francisco Planning Department
Rich Hillis is responsible for overseeing long range city planning, development review, and environmental review for most physical development in San Francisco. He served on the San Francisco Planning Commission for eight years before becoming Director of the Planning Department.
Prior to joining San Francisco Planning , Mr. Hillis served as the Executive Director for the Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture where he led its reinvigoration, investing over $60 million into the historic campus and providing a stable and vibrant home to dozens of arts organizations and events. Before joining the Fort Mason Center, Mr. Hillis served as Deputy Director of San Francisco’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development, where he managed all aspects of the redevelopment of Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island into a new 8,000-unit, mixed-use neighborhood, led efforts on priority Port development projects, and oversaw efforts to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for development along Octavia Boulevard. Previously, he was the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department’s Director of Partnerships and Property, managing RPD’s assets and concessions.
Mr. Hillis has a Master’s degree in Public Policy from the University of Chicago and a Bachelor’s from the State University of New York at Albany.

John Lum has dedicated his 30+ year career to designing, sustainable, functional, livable spaces that express the distinct design aesthetics of his clients. Rooted in a collaborative and personal process, he balances artistry with efficiency to translate clients’ visions into attainable design solutions. He approaches projects in a direct, realistic manner, analyzing the physical and psychological contexts to create inspiring spaces. He has grown the firm from a residential studio into a bustling practice that designs affordable housing, multifamily housing (SRO and micro-units), retail, hospitality and education. He continues to evolve his work by bridging the demands of sustainable solutions, financial considerations, social purpose, and personal expression.
