Join AIASF and the Center for Architecture + Design, as we kick-off a new series of design mixers showcasing firms featured in the annual publication, Small Firms, Great Projectswith this event hosted by John Lum Architecture (JLA). Note: this program has been rescheduled from June 11 and will now take place as part of the 17th annual Architecture + the City festival.

About John Lum Architecture

Founded in 1994, John Lum Architecture is dedicated to creating functional, personal spaces that express clients’ distinct aesthetics. Aiming to better community health and wellbeing, JLA combines high quality design with environmentally-sustainable practices and green building methods. The firm has an expertise in housing, ranging from custom single-family to multi-unit projects, including affordable, as well as a thriving commercial interiors practice spanning hospitality, restaurants, optometry offices and retail).

Principals

John Lum, AIA, Founding Principal
John has dedicated his 30+ year career to designing, sustainable, functional, livable spaces that express the distinct design aesthetics of his clients. Rooted in a collaborative and personal process, he balances artistry with efficiency to translate clients’ visions into attainable design solutions. He approaches projects in a direct, realistic manner, analyzing the physical and psychological contexts to create inspiring spaces. He has grown the firm from a residential studio into a bustling practice that designs affordable housing, multifamily housing (SRO and micro-units), retail, hospitality and education. 

 

Bret Walters, AIA, NCARB, Principal
Bret joined John Lum Architecture in 2010 with 18+ years of design/build, development, and construction experience. As an awarded interdisciplinary designer, Bret brings a deep expertise of materiality and artistry to his projects. He enjoys exploring new technologies and balancing practical application with personal expression. A hands-on, visual-spatial thinker, Bret has been responsible for the integration of advanced 3D software and modeling capabilities into JLA’s process, to better communicate design intent while maximizing operational efficiencies. His passion for creative problem-solving is reflected in his approach to client projects.  

Khoan Duong, AIA, Principal
Coming from a multi-disciplinary background, Khoan joined John Lum Architecture in 2004 with an in-depth focus on the sustainable design and commercial interiors industries. She has since added residential architecture to her discipline, including single family dwellings and multi-family developments. Inherently drawn to problem-solving and thorough exploration, she has a knack for coming-up with logical and efficient solutions. She enjoys collaborating with clients to discover their personal style and brings a passion for creating sustainable, responsive environments to her work. A keen eye for detail, Khoan marries her design skills with streamlined processes to help clients articulate their vision and align their goals.
