WEBINAR: Site Security Design Principles (1 LU)
Site design for security is often shied away from out of the preconception that this includes walls and fences. However, explicit and early attention to address site security needs is the best way to integrate protection into the architectural and landscape vision for the site and avoid these hardened elements. Further, many developers and owners benefit from security protections incorporated onto their site, whether it be for advertising to prospective tenants, demonstrating attention to public safety for City approvals, maintaining their image or reputation, or simply mitigating and managing their risks. Site security design includes both general crime prevention and anti-terrorism considerations, but the design approaches vary depending on the credible/likely threat. This course shares fundamentals of site design from a security point of view, including Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), blast, ballistics and hostile vehicle mitigation, and evaluates a few design examples.

- Understand the principles and fundamental approach of site design for anti-terrorism mitigation.
- Analyze the differences and similarities between applying CPTED and anti-terrorism design strategies.
- Evaluate case studies and examples for designs which address one, or both, types of site security.
About the Presenter
Deborah Blass, an Associate at Arup, is a registered professional engineer (PE) in the State of California and an industry subject matter expert in mitigations for security risks including terrorism such as blast and the use of vehicle as a weapon. She has experience consulting for multiple Bay Area corporations including technology companies and public transit agencies. She will present this AIA accredited webinar about site security design considerations including anti-terrorism and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) strategies.
