Andrew Mann Architecture is seeking a Senior Architect/Project Manager with 10-15 years experience to lead the construction of a Buddhist Temple. This person will serve as the firm’s main lead in coordinating the construction of an aspirational, once-in-a-lifetime institutional project for a local Buddhist religious community. This traditional Khmer Buddhist temple in a San Jose residential neighborhood is intended as a hub for community life and Khmer culture. It is comprised of two main structures – a sanctuary and a community building – set in a lush landscape of gardens and courtyards. The heart of the creative endeavor is the development of a building that is true to traditional Cambodian architecture, is articulated with iconographic decorative elements designed and fabricated by craftsmen in Cambodia, and meets the demands of a contemporary structure in California.
The main responsibilities for the position shall include project management during the construction administration phase this Temple project. This will involve collaboration with several talented consultant teams, close coordination with the general contractor during weekly meetings onsite, and a marshaling of the firm’s talented staff to provide top level service to all of the team members. The candidate will be tasked with the ushering of revisions through the approvals process and have direct involvement in the resolution of questions and issues that arise during construction. Following the completion of the Temple project, we envision this role to transition in the future to include a lead role in the development of single-family residential projects from the schematic design phase through construction administration. Senior Architects will often manage several projects, be responsible for project milestones, and delegate tasks to other staff members who will support your efforts. The firm looks to the strengths each team member brings to the table in order to finalize the position description, but generalists who can manage, design, and communicate thrive in this office.
A well-rounded, enthusiastic, motivated person who would like to participate in a collaborative, creative work environment will thrive in this position. The well-respected firm specializes in the design of high-end residential and custom institutional architecture. At AMA, our mission is to joyfully enrich lives through buildings which embrace connection. The office’s work is rooted in the tradition of the Bay Area style and is characterized by a crispness of detail, a richness of space and a sophisticated use of natural light. We embody a sense of humility, responsibility, passion, and pride as we collectively embrace design challenges and learn from mistakes.
Employment at Andrew Mann Architecture offers the candidate the opportunity to contribute to the design process, work with exceptional design and construction teams, follow the development of projects from conception through completion and be involved in the craft of architecture and building. Mentorship plays an important role in ethos of the firm; for the right person, this position has the potential to grow along with the growth of the firm.
Qualifications: Candidate must have past experience in the design, documentation and construction administration of both wood-frame construction residential buildings as well as exposure to some institutional or commercial work, seeing at least five to seven projects through design to completion of construction. Candidates should have a familiarity with the Bay Area style and an understanding of design, detailing, and assemblies. Relevant construction administration experience on several projects, regardless of project type, is required. Candidate must demonstrate a familiarity with the approvals process of local building and planning jurisdictions. Applicants must have impeccable references and the management skills to balance the responsibilities of multiple projects at the same time. The office works in Revit; familiarity with it or other BIM software is required. Candidates must have a working understanding of California codes and CAL Green codes and be familiar with the entitlement process.
Candidate’s background must include 10 years of combined work experience in custom residential or institutional design, and a master’s degree or bachelor’s degree of architecture. Candidates must be licensed to practice architecture in the state of California. The firm provides competitive compensation and a generous employee benefits program including health insurance and a 401(k) retirement plan.
