About our Design Approach

We work in the modernist idiom. Where possible, projects are designed according to sustainable principles. Our work is primarily focused on residential projects concentrated in the San Francisco Bay Area from Santa Cruz up to the Sea Ranch and east to the 680 corridor but some past projects have extended into other areas of California and out of state including one in Spain. Our portfolio includes new modern homes as well as modern residential remodel/additions and our clients recognize us for a variety of modernist approaches to design. Many have an affinity for the classic modernism of the 1950s and 60s, Case Study homes and Eichlers, while others may seek a warm, modern approach or a more minimalistic design. Please note that although our work is often informed by California’s Mid-Century Modern architecture, we are not preservationists. Please visit our website at and look for us on Facebook or Instagram to find out more about us.

About Our Firm

Klopf Architecture is a client focused 17-person design firm. We have created an open, inclusive and diverse team hailing from across the U.S. and various countries around the world and are partly woman-owned. Our cultural diversity includes native speakers of Mandarin, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Macedonian, and English with a roughly 50-50 ratio of male to female staff. We value all employees’ contributions and strengths, and reward them with opportunities for growth where possible.

We offer competitive compensation, 8 annual paid holidays, paid time off (amount negotiable), group medical coverage through Kaiser Permanente, group dental insurance through Delta Dental, and a 401(k) plan with company contributions. We believe strongly in our office work culture: we expect only 40 hours per week and work hybrid with three days per week in-person at the office mandated.

Our Goal for this Hire

We are looking for a senior level interior designer to lead a new interior design department within our firm. We intend for this department to take on pure interior design projects in line with our other modernist work and also work closely and collaboratively on the architectural projects in the office. Currently we integrate the interior architecture into most of our projects, and want to formalize this into an interior design department that would ultimately include:

interior design and decorating
procurement and reselling
connections/collaborations with custom fabricators for furniture and other integral items in projects
relationships with local showrooms/suppliers for all interior architecture/design items.

About You

You should demonstrate design excellence, solid organizational and communication skills and teamwork. The ideal candidate will meet the following:

Experience in a senior level position at an Interior Design firm with experience running/designing projects, and working with junior staff. This includes:
Working with clients in all phases of the projects including programming, design, permitting, detailing, construction observation, procurement and delivery/installation.
Working with a designer/draftsperson, delegating work and working within a team.
Experience working with architects is helpful, but not required.
Knowledge of how to set up and run procurement/reselling for our company.
A modernist design approach to residential projects that matches our company’s style, including a holistic approach to the entire house and just the right level of restraint.
Ability to meet with prospective clients and bring in projects is very helpful and will be required over time, but not required initially.
Interest in keeping an up to date library for relevant interior and architectural products/materials (some of this would be delegated as well).
Ability to use Archicad (or other BIM style cad program) is helpful but not required.
CCICD or other relevant licensing is preferred but not required.

Salary Range

Commensurate with experience, ranging from $120,000 to $150,000 per year.
