2022 Historic Preservation Commendation
The San Francisco Animal Care & Control project is an adaptive reuse of a historic unreinforced masonry building. The design of this facility fulfills the mission to provide housing and care to all animal species--wild and domestic, to serve the public, and to remain operational during major emergencies.
The jury was delighted to see a building like this given an incredible new life in the heart a community. It is a wonderful project, bringing delight to animals and the people who care for them through the transformation of an existing structure into something altogether new and playful. The project has a commendable sense of measure; the original building is dignified, and its history still resonates. It is a creative reuse where a large quantity of original material is retained and repaired, while several upgrades improve the well-being of occupants.
