UC Davis Teaching and Learning Complex

SmithGroup | Year: December 2021 | Location: Davis, CA

SmithGroup is currently designing a new 102,000 sf Teaching and Learning Complex (TLC) at University of California’s Davis Campus. The project will set a precedent for future development on the Davis Campus and will be a hub for student study and gathering. SmithGroup’s design concept of the “Piano Nobile” (the Grand Floor) elevates the learning experience by optimizing circulation, supporting a wide array of learning modes, adding space for a Laboratory of Learning, and increasing access to study/gather spaces.

The DPR+SmithGroup Design-Build team designed a foam-free high-performance wall system, which not only decreases energy use and increases occupant comfort, but also reduces exposure to toxic flame retardants found in most foam insulation. The high-performance envelope allowed the integrated engineering team to reduce the size of the HVAC system, allowing the project to increase classroom area by an entire classroom and achieve more educational impact within the same footprint.
