Situated along a rugged stretch of coastline, this family retreat embraces the Hawaiian volcanic landscape—the ancient flows of lava from mountain to sea—to frame dramatic vistas of the Pacific Ocean, Kua Bay, and the Kohala coastline.

The jury found this project to be refreshing in its simplicity and restraint. The materials are beautiful and deftly handled. The jury especially appreciated the elegant detailing of the screens. In framing its gorgeous site, the structure becomes less of a mundane object and more of a platform for the experiences of relaxation, escape, and an appreciation of nature.
