2022 Architecture Merit Award
Shifting volumes respond to a challenging hillside site while defining indoor and outdoor spaces – from the intimate to the breathtaking – and beneficial shading. Every detail was thoughtfully considered with the client: the home is tailored for optimal ergonomics, wellness, sustainability and a passion for art, design and technology.
The jury loved how this elegant home addresses a steep and challenging hillside site, with honest materials and expression that result in simple, unpretentious elements. The dynamic relationship of inside and outside does not succumb to the nostalgic picturesque of indoor/outdoor living; instead, the breezeway transforms the house into a sort of civic structure through an fascinating monumentalization, and the entire ecology of the back area contrasts itself from the street side, optimizing the site for great outdoor living spaces through a beautiful use of sustainable materials and landscaping.
