2019 Architecture Honor Award
Roseland University Prep is a college-preparatory high school in the heart of a community in need. The design takes inspiration from surrounding agrarian barns. Throughout, the focus is on the student experience, from flow and eddies of circulation and gathering to the deliberate exposure to light and nature.
The jury found this project to be honest and direct. Simple materials, artfully deployed, create an inspiring school environment. The crisp, clear form of the building from the exterior belies a great variety of daylit spaces within. The jury was particularly struck by the central convening area that invites students to enter and gather, from plaza on one side to courtyard on the other. Circulation in this area is also activated by the simple but dynamic section. The building’s stunning central gathering space conveys a strong sense of community and connection between interior and exterior.
