In July 2023, the City of San Francisco established a new Commercial to Residential Adaptive Reuse Program as part of its Future of Downtown initiative. In accordance with the Roadmap to San Francisco’s Future, the program is intended to facilitate the expansion of housing downtown by waiving certain Planning Code requirements.Â
Join AIASF in this town hall meeting set against the backdrop of pressing challenges and limited progress in the realm of residential conversion projects. This gathering aims to dissect the current landscape, solicit actionable feedback, and foster community engagement to overcome barriers hindering progress.
We'll delve into the work of the Commercial to Residential Task Group - formed in October 2023 and working collaboratively with the Office of Economic and Workplace Development, San Francisco Planning Department, DBI and SFFD - focused on reducing uncertainty in what building upgrades will be required with a change of use.
The Task Group consists of local architects, engineers, code experts and developers interested in realizing commercial to residential adaptive reuse projects in the C-3 zoning district using the alternative building standards established by San Francisco Building Code Article 111A.
We hope you will join us and offer your insights and perspectives which will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of San Francisco's built environment.
Leading the discussion will be Lisa Follman, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), Leo Panian, Tipping and Paul McGrath, MEYERS+ ENGINEERS.
In collaboration with the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC).
